Know the landscape before you build

Teams often discover they're building a "me-too" product after they've already spent six figures developing it. The Market Scoping Snapshot™ gives you clarity on what exists, what succeeds, and where the genuine opportunity lies — before a single line of code is written or a mould is cut.

"We kept asking ourselves if there was already something like this out there. This answered that question definitively — and showed us where no-one was playing."

What it's for

The Market Scoping Snapshot™ is designed for teams at the earliest stages of development — when you have an idea or direction but haven't yet committed to a full build. It's also useful for investors validating category attractiveness, or for brands considering a new format or age-band extension.

It works for toys, apps, digital experiences, content, and educational products. The scope is deliberately controlled — one category, one age band, one market (UK or US) — so the output is focused and actionable rather than sprawling and vague.

What happens during the project

Our research team conducts a desk-based scan of comparable products across your defined category. We identify 8–12 relevant comparators and assess them across dimensions including dominant themes, mechanics, narratives, price positioning, and claimed developmental benefits.

We then apply expert child development analysis to evaluate what's actually driving success in the category, what common weaknesses appear, and where the unmet needs lie. We examine which claimed benefits are credible and which are over-stretched.

The output is a 4–5 page Market Scoping Report structured around three areas: what the competitive landscape actually looks like, where the genuine opportunity gaps are, and what that means strategically for your specific concept or direction.

What's included in the scope

  • One product category (you define)
  • One target age band
  • UK or US market (not both — cross-market is available as an add-on)
  • 8–12 comparable products reviewed

The controlled scope is intentional. Tighter scope means sharper, more useful output. If your category is unusually broad, we'll advise on how to focus it during the brief intake process.

Why teams find it useful

Most teams do some version of this research themselves — usually via a few hours on Amazon, Google, and a competitor's website. The difference is expert interpretation: knowing not just what exists but why it succeeds or fails from a child development perspective, and what that means for how a new concept should be positioned.

The report is also structured to be useful in investor conversations and early internal alignment meetings. It gives stakeholders shared context and reduces the "well, what about X?" objections that slow teams down.

Ideal for
  • Early-stage innovation teams
  • Investors validating category attractiveness
  • Brands extending into a new format
  • Teams avoiding 'me-too' positioning
  • Anyone sharpening positioning from day one
